Do You Need a Licence to Buy an Air Pistol in the UK?

When attempting to buy any kind of air weapon, it’s important that you understand the laws and regulations surrounding such a purchase. In most cases, you will not need a licence to purchase an air pistol, providing the gun is not deemed ‘specially dangerous’.

This classification refers to pistols that fire missiles with a kinetic energy that exceeds 6ft lbs. Our pistols do not exceed this limit.

You must be 18 or over to purchase an air pistol and ammunition. There is also some legislation around air weapon delivery which you need to be aware of before making a purchase.

Air Pistols FAQs:

What types of air pistol are there?

There are four main types:

  • CO2 pistols run on 12g capsules and are often semi-automatic, with blowback on some models, like the KWC 24/7 Gen 2.
  • PCP pistols, such as the Reximex Mito, are filled from a pump or tank and give consistent, accurate shots.
  • Break barrel and over lever pistols are spring-powered and need no gas or air supply, so they're cheap to run.
  • Under lever and lever action pneumatic pistols are cocked or pumped by hand, so you don't need CO2 or a separate air supply.

What are air pistols used for?

Most people use them for target shooting, plinking in the garden and club competitions. Some are used for close-range pest control, and many CO2 models are popular with collectors because they closely copy real handguns.

Is .177 or .22 better for an air pistol?

A .177 pellet is lighter and faster with a flatter path, which makes it ideal for targets and accuracy. A .22 pellet is heavier and hits harder at short range, so it's better suited to pest control.

Can you use an air pistol for pest control?

Yes, for small vermin such as rats at short range, as long as you have permission to shoot on the land. A PCP pistol in .22 is the best choice for accuracy and power. Always make sure every shot is clean and humane.

Are the rules different in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. In Scotland you need an Air Weapon Certificate from Police Scotland to own an air pistol. In Northern Ireland, air pistols need a firearms certificate.

Can I buy an air pistol online?

Yes. By law, air weapon sales have to be completed face to face, so they can't simply be posted. Our air weapon delivery page explains how we handle it.

Can you carry an air pistol in public?

No. It's an offence to have an air weapon in a public place without a reasonable excuse, whether it's loaded or not. When travelling to a club or permitted land, carry it unloaded in a closed case.
