Do You Need a Licence to Buy an Air Rifle in the UK?

When attempting to buy any kind of air weapon, it’s important to understand the relevant laws and regulations in place. Providing an air rifle is not deemed ‘specially dangerous’, you do not need to hold a firearms licence to purchase one.

This means the rifle must not fire missiles with a kinetic energy that exceeds 12ft lbs. Our rifles do not exceed this limit.

You must be 18 or over to purchase an air rifle and ammunition. There is also some legislation around air weapon delivery which you should review before making a purchase.

Air Rifles FAQs:

What is an air rifle?

An air rifle is a long gun that fires lead or alloy pellets using compressed air, gas or a spring-powered piston, rather than gunpowder. They're used for target shooting, pest control and hunting small game such as rabbits.

What types of air rifle are there?

There are four main types:

What is a PCP air rifle?

A PCP air rifle stores compressed air in a cylinder or buddy bottle, which you fill using a hand pump or diving tank. Because there's no spring or piston, they're quiet, recoilless and very accurate, which makes them the first choice for many hunters and target shooters.

Is .177 or .22 better for an air rifle?

.177 air rifles fire a lighter, faster pellet with a flatter trajectory, ideal for target shooting and longer-range accuracy. .22 air rifles fire a heavier pellet that hits harder, so they're popular for hunting and pest control.

What's the best air rifle for beginners?

A break barrel air rifle is a great place to start. It's simple to use and cheap to run, and you don't need a pump or gas. If you want to step up to more accuracy later, a PCP rifle is the natural next move.

Are the rules different in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. In Scotland you need an Air Weapon Certificate from Police Scotland to own an air rifle. In Northern Ireland, air rifles need a firearms certificate.

Where can I shoot an air rifle?

You can shoot on private land where you have the landowner's permission, or at an approved club or range. It's an offence for a pellet to travel beyond the boundary of the land you're shooting on. It's also an offence to carry an air rifle in a public place without a reasonable excuse.

Can I buy an air rifle online?

Yes. By law, air weapon sales have to be completed face to face, so they can't simply be posted. Our air weapon delivery page explains how we handle it.
