Victorinox was founded in Switzerland in 1909, but the groundwork for its success was laid by founder Karl Elsener at the end of the 19th century with the creation of one of the world’s most iconic tools.
Elsener was a master cutler (knife maker), and in 1891, started supplying knives for the Swiss army. In 1897, he patented what was then called the ‘Original Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife’, a unique pocket multi-tool that soon became known the world over as the Swiss Army Knife. The Cross & Shield that is seen on all Swiss Army Knives is the Victorinox logo, a sign of how recognisable the brand is worldwide.
