Do You Need a Licence to Buy Airsoft Guns in the UK?

If you want to buy a single-colour realistic imitation firearm (RIF), you need to have a valid UKARA membership, meaning you’re a registered airsoft player at an insured skirmish site.

If you do not have a membership, you can still buy two-tone airsoft guns as long as you are 18 and over.

FAQs:

What is an airsoft gun?

An airsoft gun is a replica firearm that fires 6mm plastic BBs using electric, gas, spring or compressed air power. They're used for skirmishing, target shooting and collecting, and come in everything from airsoft pistols to full-size airsoft rifles.

What types of airsoft gun are there?

There are four main types:

  • Electric airsoft guns (AEGs) run on a rechargeable battery and are the most popular choice for skirmishing.
  • Gas airsoft guns, including gas blowback (GBB) models, give realistic recoil and are widely used as sidearms.
  • HPA airsoft rifles run on high pressure air from a tank and give excellent consistency.
  • Spring airsoft rifles are cocked before each shot, which makes them simple, reliable and popular for sniping.

What does an airsoft gun shoot?

Airsoft guns fire 6mm plastic BBs, usually weighing between 0.20g and 0.48g. Lighter BBs suit most AEGs and pistols, while heavier BBs are better for sniper rifles. You'll find standard, bio and tracer BBs in our airsoft BBs, ammo and gas range.

Do airsoft guns hurt?

A hit from an airsoft BB stings, a bit like a sharp flick, but it doesn't usually cause injury at normal site power levels. Eye protection is essential, and most sites also recommend face protection.

How do I get a UKARA membership?

Play at least three games over a minimum of two months at the same UKARA-registered skirmish site. The site can then register you, which lets you buy single-colour realistic imitation firearms (RIFs).

What is a two-tone airsoft gun?

A two-tone airsoft gun has at least 51% of its body in a bright colour, so it can't be mistaken for a real firearm. You don't need UKARA membership to buy one, as long as you're 18 or over.

What's the best airsoft gun for beginners?

A two-tone AEG is a great place to start. It's affordable, easy to maintain and needs no UKARA membership. The Specna Arms SA-FX01 Gen 2 Flex is a popular choice, or browse our cheap airsoft guns if you're on a tight budget.

Can you carry an airsoft gun in public?

No. Carrying an imitation firearm in a public place without a reasonable excuse is an offence. Always transport your airsoft gun in a closed bag or case, straight to and from the skirmish site.
