Acting like zombies in Shaun of the Dead

We love zombie movies at Surplus Store, and with our arsenal of air pistols, air rifles and airsoft gear, we think we could probably survive if a zombie apocalypse hits UK shores. Of course, the best thing about zombie movies is the blood and gore that comes with them, though they can be quite funny too.

We have put together some of the best zombie movie moments – and an honourable mention from the best zombie TV show, The Walking Dead.

Oh and, contains mild Spoilers! (We did warn you!)

Zombieland – How to Survive

Though not considered to be one of the best zombie movies ever, Zombieland does have a fantastic Bill Murray cameo. But it is the opening scene that tops it, as Jesse Eisenberg starts to explain the basic rules for surviving Zombieland. Cut together are hilarious and grisly zombie attacks, possibly the best being the woman launching out of her windshield because she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt (Rule no. 4).  Rule no. 1 is also useful for Airsoft!

Braindead – Lawnmower Defence (Yes, we know we’ve mentioned it before!)

Before Peter Jackson went onto fantasy epics like Lord of the Rings, he was making some fantastic ‘splatstick’ comedy horror films, one of the best being “Dead Alive” otherwise known as “Braindead” (1992), often called the goriest film ever made. One of the best scenes (or bloodiest) is when protagonist Lionel takes on a horde of zombies with a lawnmower. Lots of blood splattering and flying body parts follow. To be honest, this film could make up most of this list, but we had to pick just one! (What we’re saying is if you haven’t seen it, go see it… now!)

Shaun of the Dead – Act Like a Zombie

Shaun of the Dead was the film that brought zombies back into the mainstream, and the comedy horror is a classic. There are so many good scenes, such as Shaun and Ed selecting which records to throw at zombies. But the best has to be when Shaun and co. ‘act’ like zombies, poking fun at the many tropes zombies are known for – shuffling walks, groaning sounds and dead, vacant stares. Didn’t go so well when Rick Grimes and friends tried it in Alexandria though… So, if the worst comes to the worst, don’t try this at home!

Day of the Dead – Goodbye Captain Rhodes

From George Romero, the godfather of zombie films comes one of the best zombie movie moments in his third venture into the realm of the living dead, Day of the Dead. It is an inventive film, with a band of survivors fighting themselves as well as the zombies. The best scene? When Captain Rhodes is practically disembowelled and screaming at the zombies as they feast on his intestines.

28 Days Later – Blood in the Eye

Though 28 Days Later is not as gruesome as other zombie films, the zombies are a little scarier, as they turn so quickly and attack so fast. Not as bloody as the others on this list, one of the best the scenes in 28 Days Later packs an emotional punch. Brendan Gleason gets a drop of blood in his eye, and the infection is immediate. You can guess what happens next.

The Walking Dead – Carl Shoots Mum

When The Walking Dead hit TV screens, no one could have guessed how big it would get. There are many pivotal, bloody and heartbreaking moments in the series, but one of the worst has to be when Carl shoots his own mother, right after she gives birth. But it is Rick’s reaction that really makes you realise this is the zombie apocalypse that will never have a happy ending. Well, until Shane rearms and comes back with the Punisher series we’re ALL looking forward too!
