What is Green Gas in Airsoft?

So, what exactly is green gas in terms of airsoft? Green gas is essentially just propane gas, with a little added silicone oil and other additives. It has more of a pine-like scent. These additional additives vary the power output of an airsoft gun. Green gas is suitable with metal slide pistols and some airsoft rifles.

Green gas is also stored in the gun’s magazine, which can be topped up easily at any time. This makes it ideal on the battlefield when you need a quick and simple reload to hold off enemy attacks.

Additives also stabilise the gas and prevent it from expanding in warmer temperatures. However, the more additives in the green gas, the less powerful it is due to the reduced amount of propane, and vice versa. When the trigger is pulled, gas is released into the nozzle, causing a BB to shoot forward.

Is Airsoft Green Gas Dangerous?

Because green gas is flammable due to its propone contents, it’s essential to stay away from anything that could ignite it. However, it is perfectly safe to use during an airsoft game, and there’s no reason for airsofters to ever ignite green gas or use it near an open flame.

How to Put Green Gas in an Airsoft Gun

As mentioned previously, green gas is stored in the gun’s magazine, and it’s very straightforward to reload a gas air gun:

1. Hold the gas bottle upside down and bring it to the magazine. Gas bottles have a little adapter on them to make it easy to press into the magazine.

2. Press the gas bottle down into the magazine and hold for about ten seconds to ensure a proper refill. The gas will need to settle inside the chamber.

3. If your magazine isn’t full, repeat the process. Once full, it will start spewing gas around.

4. Carry on, skirmishers!

Green Gas vs CO2

Green gas has lower pressure than CO2, so it’s less harsh on your airsoft weapon of choice. In general, CO2 is favoured in colder months of the year as it’s less affected by temperature. However, during warmer months, it could produce more power than game sight will allow, so green gas can be a better choice.

Although green gas can be easier on your green, partially due to the silicone oil that lubricates your airsoft gun while you fire, CO2 has more of a kick when firing.

Advantages of Green Gas in Airsoft

- Easy to refill during the heat of the battle.

- Reliable and affordable.

- Silicone oil in green gas lubricates your gun for better maintenance (but you’ll still need to clean your gun regularly).

- It is easier on the barrel.

- More cost-effective.

- It is less harsh on your gun due to lower pressure.

Disadvantages of Green Gas in Airsoft

- Performs worse in cold weather conditions compared to CO2

- Bigger and heavier.

- Lower muzzle velocities.

- Cools down quicker than CO2
